As part of the 2015 Barberitos Winter Summit, Barberitos franchisees were recognized for their achievements over the past year.
A highlight of this year’s meeting was the announcement of the “Franchisee of the Year,” which Barberitos presents to the franchisee that best exemplifies the Barberitos brand and demonstrates ongoing commitment and support to not only Barberitos, but to the community as well. Barberitos’ philosophy is that each store is locally owned and operated so that it can get involved with its community and give back to those who make the store successful. This past year, Philip and Martin Kohnen, owners of Barberitos Macon, were awarded the title of 2014 Franchisees of the Year.
Philip and Martin are the proud owners of six Barberitos locations. It’s interesting to note how they made it down this path of success. Philip Kohnen is no newcomer to the Barberitos family. He started out working as a grill cook at the Athens, GA Downtown location from 2002-2004 while attending the University of Georgia in pursuit of his Bachelors Degree in Anthropology. After graduation, Philip began working as the General Manager at Barberitos Eastside in 2006 and was given the additional responsibility of being the Director of Training for Barberitos Franchising 2 years later. In 2010, Phil joined with his brother Martin and became the owner of Barberitos Milledgeville.
A customer since the first Barberitos opened, brother Martin decided to leave a career in the corporate world and team up with Philip in the operation. With Philip working in the stores managing operations and Martin working with finances and marketing, they have made quite a team the past five years. The pair has been named “Franchisee of the Year” two times since 2010, which shows their continued hard work and dedication to the brand each year. After their Milledgeville store gained popularity, the brothers began expanding their Barberitos business. The Kohnens built Barberitos Macon in 2011-2012 and Barberitos Warner Robins in 2013. They also bought Barberitos Hamilton Mill (2013), Barberitos Buckhead (2014) and Barberitos Sandy Springs (2014).
“I started as a grill cook in 2002 and worked my way up the ladder throughout the years. Having seen every facet of the business, I have faith that I am serving a quality product and have a good thing going here at Barberitos,” says Phil Kohnen, “ My brother and I center our growth around providing exemplary customer service and great food each day. We are excited for the opportunity to expand further this year with a new location coming to Macon, Ga.”
Committed to serving high-quality, fresh food, Barberitos is equipped with a diverse menu that is designed to satisfy the tastes of most customers. The franchise offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options along with hormone-free and grass-fed meats for the protein lover. Barberitos not only handcrafts each entrée to order, but also prepares its marinades, salsas, guacamole, and chips in-house daily.
