Barberitos: Women in the Workplace

December 20, 2012

(Athens, Ga.) As we embark on the 21st century, Barberitos Franchising, Inc. is a company that is highly influenced by the presence of women within its walls. In fact, two-thirds of the franchising office is female. Some of the positions that these women hold are the very positions that keep Barberitos together. CFO of the company and wife of founder Downing, Candace Barber holds one of the most important positions within the company. Another important figure, Vice President, Elizabeth Dale has been with the company for more than six years and plays a strong role as she oversees all the BFI departments. Both Candace and Elizabeth work with franchisees to ensure their success with the Barberitos brand.

Amanda McCallister, the Director of Marketing, is working on her third year at the company. Amanda is in charge of publicity and advertising for new store openings. She has been keeping the unique look and feel of Barberitos for years and heads all of its advertising efforts. She keeps Barberitos in the local media and assists franchisees as they strive to become closely involved with their own communities. Liz Thomas, the marketing coordinator, assists franchisees with advertising and works on public relations projects like writing press releases and managing social media. She is assisted by social media intern Austin McDonald. She is the witty voice of the Barberitos Facebook and Twitter pages. Austin’s cleverness and enthusiasm has increased the following of loyal Barberitos customers in recent weeks.

Miranda Bowen is the Director of Training and a Compliance Coordinator who facilitates smooth store openings by teaching the ropes to the new employees. The information and skills that she teaches them allows new franchisees to be able to run a successful business right out of the gate. Miranda also visits the store locations to ensure proper products and procedures are being implemented. Also in the Compliance Department, Jewel Adams spends 4-6 weeks completing in-store training with the actual soon-to-be owners of new locations. With stores opening every couple months, Jewel has been busy preparing franchisees for their new role as owner and operator of a Barberitos restaurant.

Also in the franchising office is receptionist Julie Jordan. In addition to greeting and talking to visitors at the office, Julie works to manage sponsorships with the local schools and organizations in the community and the Barberitos location that is owned by founder, Downing Barber.

Outside of the franchising office, nearly one-third of Barberitos’ franchisees are women. In fact, Jessica Jones, the owner of the Barberitos in Thomasville, GA was awarded the title of Franchisee of the Year in 2011. She was chosen as the winner of this award for multiple reasons. “We chose Jessica because of her location’s outstanding sales throughout the year. Her compliance scores were consistently high and she did wonderful job of getting the Thomasville Barberitos involved in the community,” said VP, Elizabeth Dale. “She exudes enthusiasm and her commitment to the Barberitos philosophy cannot be matched.”

Barberitos is a quick service restaurant offering fresh, Tex-Mex cuisine including a variety of burritos, tacos, salads, quesadillas and nachos made to order.

Barberitos has 29 restaurant franchise locations in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, and Florida. Four new stores will be opening in the first few months of 2013.
